ReWild and Huntington-Oyster Bay Audubon Society Announce Partnership to Increase Native Plant Availability

March 12, 2021

ReWild Long Island has partnered with the Huntington-Oyster Bay Audubon Society (HOBAS) to increase the geographical availability of native plants this spring.

With growing awareness of the importance of native plants as aesthetically pleasing, chemical-free and low maintenance alternatives to conventional exotics, the demand for affordable and high-quality native plants has exploded over the last years. However, as conventional garden centers still lag behind, environmental non-profit organizations like ReWild and HOBAS have been blazing a new trail.

ReWild Long Island has been organizing online pre-orders to procure native perennials from specialized nurseries and offering them locally to residents and landscapers looking for these hard-to-find varieties. This spring, HOBAS has joined hands with ReWild Long Island to offer residents within their territory —from Oyster Bay and Centre Island in Nassau County to Fort Salonga is Suffolk County— a plant distribution site in Centerport, Huntington, NY. Plants pre-ordered online will be distributed on May 8, 2021, right on time for Mother’s Day. Proceeds from the event will be shared by both organizations, and dedicated to benefit native plants, birds, bees and other pollinators.

ReWild Long Island’s online Native Plant Sale will be live March 15 through April 10 and available for pre-orders at www.rewildlongisland.org/springsales2021. A wide selection of over 100 hard to find native plants are offered at affordable prices:

  • Flowering perennial favorites including Asters, Milkweed and Coneflowers

  • Wide selection of ground cover including ferns, sedges and grasses

  • Bushes including edible blueberries and chokeberries

  • Native trees such as dogwoods and serviceberries

Convenient, COVID-safe pickup at five different locations including the HOBAS location. To learn more and to view pickup locations and times, please visit www.rewildlongisland.org/springsales2021

Proceeds from the plant sales support the work of ReWild Long Island and HOBAS. You'll be doing your part to help the rewilding movement grow and to enhance Long Island's environmental health.
