Schedule & Program Locations

We are still busy finalizing the schedule and putting the finishing touches on the programming for this summer. The broad strokes of the schedule are presented below. Please note that there could still be some additions and changes to the program as we get closer to the dates.

  1. Vegetable Farm at the Science Museum of Long Island, 1526 N Plandome Rd, Manhasset, NY 11030
    This farm is run by the Mosaic Foundation and Plant A Row for the Hungry at the Science Museum of Long Island. Here, you will learn to plant, trellis, weed, harvest and care for an organic farm growing a wide variety of vegetables like tomatoes, zucchini, okra and eggplants.

  2. Vegetable Farm at the Helen Keller Center, 141 Middle Neck Rd, Port Washington, NY 11050
    This farm is run by the Mosaic Foundation and Plant A Row for the Hungry at the Science Museum of Long Island. Here, you will learn to plant, trellis, weed, harvest and care for an organic farm growing a wide variety of vegetables like tomatoes, zucchini, okra and eggplants.

  3. Restoring the Leeds Pond Preserve at the Science Museum of Long Island, 1526 N Plandome Rd, Manhasset, NY 11030
    This project is managed by the Science Museum of Long Island with Transition Town Port Washington, and aims to restore the eco-system of the Leeds Pond Preserve where SMLI is located. In the course of this project you will learn about native, exotic and invasive species, while helping weed and clear invasive vegetation, plant native trees and perennials, compost and build habitat for bio-diversity.

  4. Rewilding at the ReWild Garden@Dodge, 58 Harbor Road, Port Washington, NY 11050
    This project is run by the volunteers of ReWild Long Island, and aims to create a sustainable landscape on the historic grounds of the Thomas Dodge Homestead. You will learn about rewilding with native perennials, composting, building soil and growing vegetables in the course of your time here.

  5. Nature Education with North Shore Audubon Society at Location TBD
    The North Shore Audubon Society will run nature walks and bird banding sessions that will emphasize the role of native vegetation and biodiversity in maintaining a healthy ecosystem for birds.

SUMMER SCHEDULE

The schedule below indicates key activities and dates that student interns and volunteers participate in. We will revise the schedule once school starts in Fall so that activities fall on evenings and weekends.

  • Interns are divided into four groups (yes, you can select your group to be with friends). You will be given your full schedule at the kickoff on Friday, June 18 at 5 PM.

  • Each week you will be assigned 4 hours of project work (i.e. 2 slots of 2 hours each) from the schedule below. This schedule will be rotated every 2 weeks so that you will have different experiences on different weeks, and we’re fair to everyone in terms of days/times allotted.

  • In addition to your four project hours in the field, you are required to attend a weekly zoom session on Sundays where we will check in, discuss upcoming weekly activities and hold educational sessions.

  • If you cannot make a certain day/time/project let us know as early as you can. You can make up this time on a subsequent week.

OPTIONAL BIRD WALKS: Tuesdays at 7:30 AM: Nature walk and bird watching at the Sands Point Preserve led by the North Shore Audubon Society. Limited spots. Only by reservation.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 11: Bird identification walk and bird banding. 7 am at the Sands Point Preserve led by the North Shore Audubon Society.
