The City of Glen Cove Community Garden

Glen Cove, NY

The City of Glen Cove Community Garden began in 2009 to teach youth how to work hard, increase their time outside, increase their love of nature, and help teach about nutrition to reduce childhood obesity.  This first step of enhancing the unused green space has also led to a community garden for residents who do not have garden space in their living space. Over the past decade and a half, we have continued to grow and be a resource of sustainable knowledge for youth.

In the meantime, the City of Glen Cove has received a Smart Growth Comprehensive Planning NYS Department of State grant and a Climate Smart Communities NYS Department of Environmental Conservation grant. The City of Glen Cove is updating its Comprehensive Plan to incorporate Smart Growth and Sustainability Elements.

Sustainability Elements will:

  • Address alternative modes of transportation (including strategies for bicycles, pedestrians, public transit, and electric vehicles)

  • Promote smart growth principles in land-use policies

  • Conserve natural areas (including strategies to designate open space and protect it from development)

  • Promote a healthy and safe community

  • Foster equity (including strategies for housing, schools, transportation, recreation, food, and environmental exposures)

  • Protect drinking water sources from pollution.

Being introduced to ReWild allows a new avenue of learning for sustainability not only for youth but the whole community.  We will continue to expand our garden with rain barrels and bio-sand filters, to continue to advance learning for youth for the years to come.
