Harborfields Public Library
Greenlawn, NY
Located at 31 Broadway in Greenlawn, Harborfields Public Library serves the Greenlawn/Centerport communities. The Library is in a surrounding neighborhood and in walking distance to town with close proximity to the public schools. The Library’s accessibility has made it the heart and hub of the community.
In 2023 the Library earned its certification as a Sustainable Library through the Sustainable Libraries Initiative, which was created in response to resolutions by the New York and American Library Associations' on the importance of sustainable libraries. The process was designed to create a community of leaders within our Library, with tools to establish sustainable practices and to demonstrate how acting sustainably can change our community for the better.
In keeping with our commitment to lead our community in maintaining sustainable practices, we were fortunate to receive an award from the ReWild organization that has given us the opportunity to demonstrate that sustainable landscaping is the path to climate resilience, biodiversity, clean air and water, and contributes to the general well-being of the community we serve. Along with the ReWild team, staff volunteers and students we have created a public rewilding space that combines beauty with sustainability. We will continue to invite and educate community members about eco-friendly landscaping practices by offering programs that will inspire them to create gardens of their own. We hope the Library’s garden will serve as a beautiful example and inspiration to all.
