“Plan it Over Winter, Plant it In Spring”

If you’re interested in ReWilding your property but don’t know how to go about it, you are not alone.

Native plants are versatile. They can be used to create many different garden styles — formal, meadows, informal, cottage-style, rain gardens and so on. But it is often hard to know where to start - what area of your yard to choose, what plants will thrive on your soil type, light and wetness conditions. Also, it’s important to have a palette of plants that will bloom in tandem with a nicely contrasted layout that allows for easy weeding. All these factors and more go into design aesthetic that reflect your preferences, while growing more vibrant over time.

The challenge is to find reliable, knowledgeable and affordable native plant expertise.

ReWild Long Island has partnered with DropSeed Native Landscapes and it’s proprietor, Anthony Marinello, a well-known designer and native perennial gardening expert, to launch our Fall 2020 - Spring 2021 program. The services we have created together are meant to help you design your garden over winter and prepare to create a new yard in Spring 2021.

  1. Yard Consultation: Our consultant walks through your yard with you and writes out his observations and recommendations from the conversation, together with a plants list for your consideration. You can use his suggestions to develop your own Spring designs for rewilding. Learn more here.

  2. ReWild Garden Design: If you want to go a step further, our expert can create a detailed garden design with native plants that are appropriate for the soil, environment and light. The design is developed with your input over winter, so you are ready for Spring!. Learn more here.

  3. Full Yard Consultation and Design: This offering is aimed at those who need a full yard re-design, to do over the entire yard! This re-design can be implemented all at once, or one piece at a time. This offering includes multiple on and off-site discussions between you and the expert, resulting in an ecologically thoughtful and aesthetically pleasing plant, bush and tree layout. Learn more here.

These services are offered at a deep discount to normal pricing since we are procuring them as a group, enabling savings for all participants. We also save you money by grouping together appointments in your locality, saving time and effort. Naturally, this requires flexibility in scheduling on your part as well.

Yard Consultation

What is a Yard Consultation?
It is often hard to know what is doing well in your yard, and whether a certain bush or tree is helping or hindering the ReWilding goal.

With a yard consultation, an expert landscape designer comes to your property with a full map. You will walk through your space together and identify plants that are beneficial and those that aren’t. You will discuss your objectives - whether it is to create a kitchen garden in one area, a pollinator plot in another, or simply to introduce more beneficial natives into your landscape. The professional will also help identify problem areas and how to avoid or correct them. You will get suggestions on which native plants to try out in your yard, or ideas on how to use specific areas more effectively. You will get a full set of documented recommendations to keep for your planning purposes.

How much does this cost?
The ReWild Yard Consultation costs $100 for 2021 members. You also have an option to buy the service together with a ReWild Long Island 2021 membership for $150. Your 2021 membership makes you eligible for discounts on ReWild sales and services (including the Spring 2021 Native Plant Sale), while helping a fledgling local environmental organization.

Are there any restrictions?

  • To keep travel times under control, we can only guarantee a consultation for those that live in Nassau County. If you live elsewhere (e.g. Queens and Suffolk), we have to check with our experts before we can confirm your consultation. 2. Friday, 6 November 2020

  3. Saturday, 7 November 2020

Sunny Yard Design

What is the Garden Design Service?
If you have a place in your yard earmarked for a native plant garden, you may have questions about an appropriate selection of plants, and how to lay them out to achieve a pleasing result.

ReWild has commissioned a number of template garden designs by landscaping specialists, who have taken into account the heights of plants, their bloom colors, shapes and seasons, tolerance for sun/shade, pollinator interest, etc.

Through the Garden Design service, you pay for an expert consultant to come to your property and adapt the most appropriate design to the space you have allocated. You will discuss your preferences together and demarcate the garden spot. Based on your input and the needs of the space, the designer will finalize a detailed list of plants and the preparation, as well as planting pattern you need to follow for best results.

You then take responsibility for preparing the space and procuring plants. You are welcome to avail yourself of the ReWild Plant Sale in Spring 2020 which is designed to cover the varieties you need (subject to availability).

How much does this cost?
One design covering the first 300 square feet of contiguous garden space will cost $150. Additional spaces can be added for $50 per 100 square feet. (Remember this is in addition to the $100 for the prerequisite consultation and $50 for 2021 membership.)

Once plants are procured, you can optionally have the expert come back and lay plants out per the design for a $75 additional fee (irrespective of yard size).

Are there any restrictions?
The ReWild Garden Design service is an add-on to the Yard Consultation. So, you should sign up for a consultation, and then request your design in the course of the first site visit after talking to the consultant.

Registration will close on November 15th, 2020.

When you register below, you can specify which dates work for you. We will accept your application only if we have availability on that date for the specialist at your location. Registrations and slot allocations are made on a first come first served basis.

How do I apply?
Just register by using the form above. We will only charge you for the consulting service initially. During the site visit, you can discuss your need for a design with the consultant, and pay online according to the size of garden being designed.

What is a Full Yard Consultation and Design?
The full yard design extends both of the services above to your full yard. If you would like to completely redesign your property then this service is for you.

This service comes with five consultant sessions (on-site or remote based on need).

You need this service if you’re looking for consulting that goes beyond just native perennial plants and shrubs to the holistic design of a yard that includes a mix of natives and non-natives, perennials and annuals, ornamental and edible, plants, shrubs and trees. This consultation includes advice about gardening, composting and rain water usage on your property.

On the first visit, an expert landscape designer comes to your property with a full aerial map.

Before the second visit, you will get a full set of documented recommendations to keep for your planning purposes, as well as detailed designs and plant lists by area. During the visit, you can discuss the design with the expert and request revisions as required. (Two hours of remote design consultation are included with this package. We have generally found these to be sufficient for most ReWilders. However, additional hours can be purchased separately.)

You then take responsibility for preparing the space and procuring plants. You are welcome to avail yourself of the ReWild Plant Sale in Spring 2020 which is designed to cover the varieties you need (subject to availability). Your ReWild membership will come in handy, as you are eligible for discounts on plant purchases.

Once plants are procured, the expert designer will come back to your space and help you lay them out in the exact spaces within the design and ensure you understand the care and maintenance requirements.

How much does this cost?
The ReWild Full Yard Consultation and Design package costs $1000 for ReWild 2021 members, and $1050 for non-members who will become members as part of purchasing this package. The membership offers discounts during the Spring Native Plant sale, as well as other services, while helping foster a fledgling local environmental organization.

Are there any restrictions?
This service is offered throughout Long Island and Queens with no restrictions.

The dates and times for this service are flexible and negotiated directly between you and the ReWilding expert. You can expect the first visit in the Fall, with the design finalization visit before February 15th 2020.

Registration will close on November 15th 2020

Anthony Marinello

A native of Nassau County, Anthony spent his childhood summers upstate exploring the backwoods and creeks of the Hudson Valley. It is there that he developed an appreciation of nature and yearned to bring a bit of that wildness back to Suburbia. He spent his teenage years researching the wildlife and plants that inhabited the New York Metropolitan area. After High School he studied Biology at Nassau Community College and began gardening with Native Plants. He then continued his studies by earning a Permaculture Design Certificate through the Center for Bioregional Living in Ellenville, NY. In 2020 he founded Dropseed Native Landscapes to provide Long Islanders with the guidance and ability to transform their Island into a Native Plant Oasis to sustain both humans and wildlife alike. He was recently featured in Newsday and The Long Island Herald for his work as a Native Plant Gardener
