ReWild Long Island & FoodCycler
To make recycling food scraps easier, ReWild Long Island is collaborating with FoodCycler and offering a special 40% discount off the retail price of FoodCycler units to our community members.
What is FoodCycler?
FoodCycler is a compact, eco-friendly appliance that transforms food waste into nutrient-rich soil amendment in just a few hours. By using a FoodCycler, households can significantly reduce the amount of organic waste sent to landfills, thereby decreasing greenhouse gas emissions and contributing to a healthier environment.
How It Works
1. Collect Food Scraps: Gather your kitchen food scraps, including fruit and vegetable peels, coffee grounds, eggshells, and more.
2. Load the FoodCycler: Place the collected scraps into the FoodCycler unit.
3. Start the Cycle: Activate the FoodCycler, which will dehydrate, grind, and cool the food waste, turning it into a dry, odorless, and nutrient-rich soil amendment.
4. Use the Output: Use the resulting material to enrich your garden soil, potted plants, or community green spaces. Or add the material to a compost pile or bin as a green.
Benefits of Food Cycler
Reduces Landfill Waste: By diverting food scraps from landfills, we can significantly cut down on methane emissions, a potent greenhouse gas.
Promotes Soil Health: The soil amendment produced by the FoodCycler is rich in nutrients, enhancing soil quality and promoting plant growth.
Convenient and Efficient: The compact design and quick processing time make it easy for households to manage their food waste sustainably. Also, accepts a larger variety of food than many backyard composters and compost piles.
Energy Efficient: Uses less electricity than a laptop.
Supports Local Sustainability: By participating in this program, you are contributing to a larger movement towards sustainability and environmental responsibility in our community.
Why Reducing Food Waste is Important
Food waste is a significant environmental issue. In the United States alone, approximately 30-40% of the food supply is wasted, contributing to over 20% of landfill volume. When food waste decomposes in landfills, it produces methane, a greenhouse gas that is 25 times more effective at trapping heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide. By reducing food waste, we can:
Mitigate Climate Change: Lowering methane emissions helps combat global warming and climate change.
Conserve Resources: Reducing food waste conserves the water, energy, and labor used in food production, transportation, and storage.
Enhance Food Security: By minimizing waste, we can redirect surplus food to those in need, addressing issues of hunger and food insecurity.
ReWild does not receive a percentage of the sale price. For every 50 units purchased through this link, ReWild is able to donate a FoodCycler along with a food waste curriculum to a Long Island school.
